This is a 5 frame resource for use with Reception or Year 1 pupils. You can print and laminate it for use again and again to reinforce the key understanding of the fiveness of five. It visually shows multiple ways of making 5. I have used this as a group activity where the children have been provided this resource alongside a blank 5 frame, counters, number lines and a whiteboard or paper and pencils for the children to record their findings.
It can also be a valuable tool for stimulating discussion with your pupils. Talk about the number of reds and yellows. How many altogther? Can you show me 5 fingers? Encourage the child/children to show you one hand to reinforce the idea that we have 5 fingers on each hand. Look there is one yellow. Can you put 1 finger up? How many are down? Link this to the number of red dots on the 5 frame. Repeat the sentence 1 and 4 make 5. Repeat with a different 5 frame.

This is a maths activity that can be used to reinforce the children’s understanding on number bonds to 8, suitable for Early Years and Year One. Print, cut out and laminate these dominoes. I have used these in the classroom as an independent group activity where the children select a domino, subitise how many on each side and identify how many altogether, counting if needed. They can then record their understanding through the use of numbers and symbols. Encourage the children to use the stem sentence ___ and ___ make ___ to help to hold this new knowledge within their memory. Repetition here is key.
